St. Catherine's Monastery is located at the foot of Mount Sinai and is one of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries in the world. It was founded in the 6th century by order of Emperor Justinian and dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, whose relics were discovered here in the 8th century. The monastery is famous for its rich library, which houses rare manuscripts and books, as well as its collection of icons, some of which date back to the 6th century.
